Big Breakfast and Balloon Race - Sydenham High School

Big Breakfast and Balloon Race

edit

Our most successful fundraising event ever!

27 April 2012

Amazingly the worst of weather held off as around 700 students and staff took to the Astroturf for our Big Breakfast and Balloon Race this morning. With Sir Steve Bullock, our mayor, and Dr Joan Greenwood MBE acting as witnesses, the school aimed to smash the current Guinness World Record for the biggest cereal breakfast.

An experiment with a balloon-borne intervalometer camera entertained the assembled students as they ate their breakfast clad in waterproof ponchos, singing along to Beyonce and Justin Bieber.  Some of the photos can be seen in the gallery below.

The highlight of the event was the launch of the Balloon Race, with a prize of an iPad for the balloon that travels the furthest distance.  The 1500 pink and purple balloons were just the first flight; girls exceeded all expectations by selling around 3500 balloons.  The remaining balloons were launched a week later after a sterling effort by a team of parent volunteers to blow up another 2000 balloons.

The event has raised nearly £9000 for our 125th anniversary charities; Teenage Cancer Trust, Leukaemia Research and the Bone Cancer Trust.  A massive thank you to everyone for their help and support, it was a real community effort.
