Half Term Sports Highlights - Sydenham High School

Half Term Sports Highlights

edit

The days may still be short but it’s been a busy half term of sporting activity at both Junior and Senior schools.  Here are some of the highlights:-

Junior Netball

Congratulations to our Year 5 A team who swept the board at the Year 5 Netball Tournament held at JAPS on the last day before half term (12 February 2016).  They defeated all but one team – St Christopher’s with whom they drew 2:2 – with a series of incredible score lines:  9:0 vs both Alleyn’s and JAPS, 8:0 vs Blackheath High, 5:1 vs Streatham & Clapham High and 2:0 against Dulwich Hamlet.

Year 5 A and B team previously beat Alleyn’s  away on Thursday 28 January.  The Year 5 team had also won against JAPS this term. The team included Gabriella Bishton, Olivia Alderton, Zaida Iscandari, Martha Roberts, Harmoney Newell, Shanna Tagwireyi and Kayla Victor.  There was outstanding goal scoring by Kayla and Harmoney, who practice scoring at home and at breaktimes and lunchtimes at school.  The A team won by a huge margin 11-6 and the B team won 5-1.

Junior Cross Country

Our first Inter house cross country took place on Thursday 14 January 2016 for all junior girls. KS1 ran laps around the Astroturf and KS2 ran at Crystal Palace Park.  The top 10 girls from each year were awarded SydStars points: 10 for the winner, 9 for second place and so on. Martha Roberts in Year 5 gained the fastest lap time at Crystal Palace Park, while Miranda Fitzpatrick and Georgia Sullivan had a ‘photo’ finish for the Year 6 race. Guerney won the House trophy with 102 points. Well done to everyone who took part in what was a tough and muddy race.

England V Australia Netball

The PE department took 20 girls to watch England v Australia at the Copper Box Arena on 22 January 2016.  The girls thoroughly enjoyed the evening even though Australia won.  The girls were surprised at the pace of the game and how quickly the ball can go from one goal to the other in a matter of seconds.

Junior Gymnastics

Well done to Olivia Alderton in Year 5 who won a gymnastic competition at Charisma Gymnastics Club.  She took the gold medal in her age group for bars, beam, floor and vault and also claimed a trophy in the 8-12 year old category.

Senior Netball

Congratulations to Alexandra Housley who has been selected for the Surrey Storm talent squad in netball. This is a tremendous achievement as Surrey Strom is to netball what Manchester United is to football! Alexandra played in her debut match on Friday 5 Feb and was voted Player of the Match by the coach, and Players’ Player by her team mates.

Our Year 8 A & B netball teams won convincingly against Alleyn’s this term: 21-2 and 7-3 respectively.

Senior Rowing

Sydenham High’s new rowing club entered its first rowing competition – the South of England Indoor Rowing Championships – in January. Year 10 and Year 11 girls rowed in both individual and relay events.  They were pushed to their limit and managed to out row a number of schools with established teams and long rowing traditions. Laure Denaro finished 6th out of 30 in the women’s U15 event; Clara Forbes came 7th and Ella Plumb was 13th.  A fantastic result considering it was their debut competition and they had been in training for less than six months. The girls have shown excellent commitment as they train before school on Thursday mornings, on ergo machines at Dulwich College, and every Saturday on the river at Putney in conjunction with Dulwich College’s rowing club.

The team: Phoebe Emburey; Rebecca Meskel; Laure Denaro; Darcy Quist; Tia Nasir; Ella Plumb; Clara Forbes; Ayo Adelaja.

Senior Cross Country

Congratulations to the Year 7 and Year 8 cross country teams who participated in the Lewisham Schools Cross Country championships. Tilly Sevens-Cox finished in an impressive second place in the Year 7 race and in the Year 8 race Ellie Osmond came 1st, followed closely by Amelia English in 3rd place and Sophie Harris in 6th. All pupils ran well and paced themselves over a muddy course.

Year 7 Team: India Adams, Emily Coulson, Josie Gilroy, Isabelle Mulcahy, Marta Pearson-Saenz , Tilly Stevens-Cox, Jazil Lupor Heda

Year 8 team: Margaux Brewin, Ana Constantine, Issy Daley, Amelia English, Sophie Harris, Ellie Osmond

Ellie Osmond and Amelia English also ran in the London Schools Cross Country as individuals and came 43rd and 58th respectively in a very large field of competitors – both ran remarkably well.

Senior Football

Our senior football team played very well in their first competitive fixture against Sedgehill, showing great determination to come from 0-3 down to eventually win the match 6-4.

We have another fixture against the same opposition straight after half term, so the girls will have to be very focused if they want to come out on top again. The squad, drawn from Years 7 and 8, included: Emily Walsh, Esme Burke, Charlotte Nevrkla-Wood, Sophie Harris, Maria Torren, Francesca Dinsdale, Eleanor Press and Eleanor Othen.

Senior Swimming

Y8 swimmer Frances Newe took part in the Surrey Championships and came 2nd in 400m Individual medley, achieving a new personal best time that puts her in the top 25 girls in the country for her age group. She has some more races over the next few weekends and we wish her more success in these.
