Successful start to Summer sports

edit

Sydenham High’s Summer term sports have got off to a great start, from athletics to cricket.

Junior School

At the Year 6 athletics competition at St Christopher’s School, Beckenham, our Year 6 A relay team (Georgia Sullivan, Ella Salau, Evie Samways and Teya Benn) took first place, whilst Georgia made the final of the 80m sprint and finished in a credible 5th place and Evie Samways-Mortby finished 4th in the long jump. Overall the school finished in 3rd place out of 9 schools – an excellent effort by everyone.

Friday the 13th held no qualms for our Year 5 athletes as they attended the annual Year 5 athletics tournament, also at St Christopher’s.  Kayla Victor came first in the 80m sprint heat and then went on to win the gold medal in the final beating all 9 teams.  The Year 5A relay team also claimed first place. The relay A team: Kayla Victor, Olivia Alderton, Martha Roberts and Martha Pardue.  Zaida Iscandari finished 5th in the ball throwing and Olivia finished 4th in the long jump. Gabriella Bishton made 1m15 in the high jump. Martha Roberts finished 5th in the cross country race. The team finished in overall 2nd place out of 7 teams entered.

Senior School

Similar successes have been accruing at Senior School, starting with our Year 7 A and B Rounders teams who came 1st & 2nd at Lewisham Borough Championships We also won the Year 8 tournament. The Year 8 A team followed this with a win against Alleyn’s in a friendly.

The following girls have been selected to represent Lewisham at the London Schools Athletics at Battersea on Sat 11 June:

  • Grace Fullerton Y9 – Hurdles, 100m & relay
  • Lauren Lawrence Y9 – Shot Putt
  • Laure Denaro Y10 – Discus
  • Khadijah Mellah Y10 – Javelin
  • Rebecca O’Connor Y10 – 800m
  • Chloe Harris Y10 – Hurdles & Long Jump
  • Phoebe Emburey Y11 – HammerG

Three students took part in the London Youth games trampoline competition representing Southwark last weekend.  The standard of competition was very high including contenders on the national circuit but all three did extremely well in gaining respectable scores in their very first competition.  Well done to Laure Denaro (Year 10), Maria Torren (Year 8) and Zara Pashov (Year 8).

In swimming, Frances Newe (Year 8) has been competing at the London regionals where she came away with 4 gold medals in 200m breaststroke, 200m butterfly, 400m individual medley and 200m individual medley. She is now ranked No 1 in the London region in these events and 7th in Britain for the 200m breaststroke in her age group, and is therefore likely to qualify for the British Summer Championships in Sheffield in August.

In cricket, the U13 team beat Bromley High 78-71 in our first cricket match of the season (Monday 23 May).  A group also attended the England Cricket 2020 match between Middlesex and Surrey where they took part in a number of coaching sessions and were lucky enough to meet three top class women’s cricketers – Danielle Wyatt (England player), Charlotte Edwards (retiring England captain) and Heather Knight (England vice captain)
