Surrey rugby call-ups & netball champions top sport news

edit

sophie-harris-eleanor-pressSport has got off to an exciting start this term with our first ever Surrey women’s rugby call-ups for two U15 players, Sophie Harris and Ellie Press.

Their selection follows a strong team performance last season in which our squad’s skills really stood out at a number of tournaments and festivals.

The team was also honoured at the Surrey Festival with the ‘core values’ cup for being the best team at demonstrating rugby’s five core values of teamwork, respect, enjoyment, discipline and sportsmanship. This is an important aspect of the tournaments as it is voted on by the sports’ coaches of all participating teams.

There was further good news in other sports too:-

jumping-snr-netballers-oct2016Netball: Our Year 9 team became Lewisham champions in September – something for the many enthusiastic Year 7s who have been attending matches and training this term to aspire to.

Year 5 and Year 6 have also played against Year 7 which really gives everyone the opportunity to involve lots of girls in friendly, yet competitive matches.

We also have a Year 7 team representing Sydenham in another Lewisham Tournament in November with many more matches to look forward to.

Rowing: We now have 27 rowers training twice a week with Dulwich College, both on the Thames and at DC.with-cambrige-uni-boat-crew-img_3020

Our Year 10 crew were also excited to received some some top class encouragement recently when they their Saturday river practice coincided with that of the Cambridge crew who were happy to give them some top tips and pose for a photo.

Everyone is now looking forward to competing early in 2017. Next stop: our own blades and boat!

Country:  Junior School runners from Year 3 -6 took part in the Tony James Memorial Cross Country Race and the team finished a strong 7th out of 16 schools and over 200 runners.  Well done to Martha Roberts who pipped Laura Smart to the post to be the highest ranked finisher in 43rd place with Laura in 45th place.  Congratulations also go to Luna Bouten who finished 3rd out of 110 girls who entered the Year 3 & 4 fun run and won a medal; she was the highest placed finisher out of both races.

Football: The U14 football team were victorious over their first opponents of the season – Harris Academy.
