Elite athlete pupils benefit from re-launched High Performance Programme

edit

We are extremely excited to have completed a full year of our re-launched programme for elite athletes. The ‘High Performance Programme’ has been designed to support and enhance the personal and sporting development of athletes who compete at county level (or equivalent) and above, in their chosen field.

The programme aims to help athletes to realise their potential by achieving a good sport/study/life balance and by tracking and monitoring their progress. Selected athletes attended a variety of different half-termly seminars and workshops covering a range of sports performance topics, delivered by both internal and external experts. They covered topics such as time management, fitness training, motivational strategies, sports psychology and emotional/social well being.

This years’ programme sessions have included a ‘Body Change: Training though puberty‘ workshop from the independent Coach Education Company, a talk from a senior physiotherapist about injury prevention and rehabilitation and pupils were also inspired by Olympic, GB and England Hockey player Hannah Martin who spoke about how she reached success and balancing university and training/ competitions. We were delighted to also host contributions from alumnae:
Ally Housley (Class of 2016) joined us online in January all the way from sunny Australia where she was playing netball. Ally graduated from the University of Nottingham in 2021 with a First Class Joint Honours in the field of Psychology and Cognitive Neuroscience. Her experience as a Netball player for U21 England team, Wasps and Telstars was invaluable to share with current pupils considering treading a similar path. Cricketer Kira Chathli who plays for Surrey County Cricket Club Women’s XI, the South East Stars and has just debuted for England A is also Head Coach and Founder of the Next Level Cricket Academy. In her talk she discussed the gender disparity in cricket, sporting careers & the intricacies of setting up a business.

Sports Scholars also attended the GDST Elite Sports Scholars Day when over 400 GDST athletes across 19 schools got to take part in a range of sports, attend workshops & meet paralympians, Olympians and sports journalists. Congratulations to all our elite athletes who completed the programme and have made outstanding contributions to sport in and outside of school this year.

We have found that our current pupils particularly appreciate interaction with our alumnae community and the experience tends to be a positive and rewarding one for both parties! If you are able to offer any specialist support for the PE High Performance programme, please do get in touch via
