Mr Wagg, Head of Geography, was part of the pilot phase of a new initiative this summer and became the first teacher in London to receive accreditation. UN CC:Learn aim to integrate climate change knowledge into all core subjects as part of a coherent part of learning programme. includes peer-to-peer approach where pupils connect with their peers about climate, exchanging ideas and creating simple solutions to reduce their carbon footprint.

This Project was conceived by Melanie Harwood, Education Specialist, and Denise Meissner, Occupational Therapist and Autism Specialist, both of Harwood Education. A partnership was formed with the UN CC:Learn (UNITAR) Team to deliver their vision and mission to ensure that there is a Climate Change Teacher, accredited by the One UN Climate Change Learn Partnership in Every School throughout the world.

Every child of today will spend their entire life living side by side, tackling the challenges of climate change. They will also enter the work force which will need them to be climate change literate and able to strive through innovation. Mr Wagg completed the five units of the course, and became accredited by UN CC:Learn to deliver climate change facts and mitigation best practices. The aim s that all accredited teachers will be able to encourage and generate social innovation, and prepare today’s youth to protect the planet.

Mr Wagg now intends to:

1) Include the most up to date research and ideas into the curriculum for year 7-13.

2) Launch an ‘Outrage and optimism’ club where we look to consider actions we can take to make a difference through actions and advocacy (run in conjunction with the geography prefects in year 13).

3) Look into holding an evening event at school, chaired by himself and a panel of students to educate parents and the wider community.
