Black History Month Highlights

A vibrant month of learning, creativity, and reflection, celebrating Black history, culture, and inspiring voices.

Pop-up marketplace

The pop-up marketplace showcased local Black-owned businesses, from books and fashion to food and textiles, inspiring conversations about entrepreneurship and culture.

It has been a wonderful celebration of Black History Month, beginning with a moving assembly that set the tone for the weeks ahead. At Prep School, the girls were treated to African drumming workshops where they learnt how to make music on the djembe, and visits from special guests who shared personal stories about the childhoods and life experience. At Senior School, Year 9 opened with a spirited performance of the Swahili folk song Siyahamba, followed by Sixth Form reflections on this year’s UK theme: Standing Firm in Power and Pride. Pupils explored how power and pride have shaped Black history and culture through stories of inspiring figures such as Baroness Doreen Lawrence OBE, Andrea Levy, and Benjamin Zephaniah, alongside reflections on landmark moments like the 60th anniversary of the Race Relations Act.

Throughout the month, pupils took part in a series of vibrant, pupil-led events. Year 12 Comfort led Stomp n’ Shake, which brought the school together to learn cheerleading chants celebrating pride and unity, and hosted a dynamic session on The History of Slam Poetry, inviting pupils to create and perform their own pieces. Other Year 12 pupils presented an insightful talk on Ethiopian royalty, exploring the emperors and legends that shaped Africa’s only uncolonised empire.

The pop-up marketplace was a highlight of the celebrations, showcasing local Black-owned businesses — from Moon Lane Books to traditional spices, drinks, fashion, and textiles — and inspiring conversations about culture and entrepreneurship. Year 8 explored artefacts celebrating Black artists and cultural heritage at the V&A South Kensington, while Sixth Form students took part in Dulwich College’s STEM and Collaboration Day, joining peers from local schools to mark Black History Month.

The celebrations culminated in an unforgettable visit from Dr Stuart Lawrence, who shared his personal story and his mission to create a more inclusive and equitable society. Hearing his reflections on his brother Stephen Lawrence’s legacy was both humbling and deeply inspiring.

Black History Month at Sydenham High has been a time of reflection, learning and empowerment. As we look ahead, we remain committed to celebrating diversity, standing firm in our values, and continuing to make a positive difference — together.
