Exceptional education for girls
Move over traditional careers education, step in Futures preparation! ‘Own Your Future’ is more than a careers provision – it’s a mindset embedded into school life. In a fast-changing world where girls may enter careers that do not yet exist, research shows that young women often feel underprepared for life beyond school. We are changing that, offering a personalised, future-focused programme that equips every girl with the confidence, curiosity and clarity to forge her future.
“In line with the head’s belief that Sydenham High girls can do anything they put their mind to, the careers provision is impressive.”
We are thrilled to have been awarded Private Girls’ School of the Year 2025 at the Private Education Awards. Alongside our dedication to exceptional academic provision and personal development for all our girls, we offer a pioneering Futures provision specifically designed to prepare girls for an ever-changing world.
Our Futures programme is exceptional in its relevance and intentional design for 21st-century learners. Future skills are not taught in isolation but thoughtfully woven into timetabled PSHE lessons and our bespoke Elevate Curriculum. Ten years ago we spearheaded the first Power Skills Programme, a bespoke and unique aspect of our Sixth Form timetabled provision, aimed at equipping students with relevant and transferable skills for life beyond school. As Reuters reported, “power skills aren’t just nice to have— they are essential skills for an ever-changing workplace.”
The Elevate Curriculum is a pioneering initiative offering pupils across the Senior School timetabled periods to study key Future skills, placing emphasis on the ability to develop as a rounded individual ready to take her seat at the boardroom table – be that for a global corporation or start-up agricultural innovator!
Alongside this, one-to-one guidance from our Head of Futures, sector-specific talks, workplace visits and our annual Futures Fair, ensure that pupils are continually exposed to fresh insights and real-world experiences.
Our girls have a real competitive advantage through GDST’s 100,000-strong alumnae network, with our own alumnae generously giving back through expert talks, mentoring and university application support.
Our dedication to future-proofing our girls saw the launch of our inaugural Futures Conference 2025, bringing together leaders from STEM, public service, the creative industries and graduate recruitment to offer honest, practical advice, hands-on workshops and spark aspiration. Feedback was overwhelmingly positive: 94% of attendees said they felt “better informed about the range of options available” and “more confident about their future.”
Our programme aligns with evolving employer needs. With the World Economic Forum warning that 40% of core job skills will be disrupted by 2027, our curriculum places emphasis on adaptability, lifelong learning and digital resilience. Pupils are introduced early to future-focused skills such as teamwork, communication, ethical leadership, entrepreneurship and creativity— they are not just preparing for a career, but learning how to thrive in one.
We make excellent use of technology. Unifrog is used from Year 7 to Year 13, enabling pupils to explore pathways, track skills and build meaningful career portfolios. We also support Sixth Formers in setting up LinkedIn profiles and learning how to network and present themselves professionally online. This continuity enables truly personalised guidance and helps us build a complete picture of each girl’s evolving aspirations.
Our tiered support ensures age-appropriate provision. From our Prep’s Daydream Believers programme, to self-awareness and discovery in Years 7 and 8, to workplace visits and subject-career links in Year 9, every stage builds towards independence. In Years 10 and 11, one-to-one advice and research skills take centre stage. In the Sixth Form, we offer tailored support for UCAS, apprenticeships and gap year planning. They also learn essential life skills—from budgeting and finance to cooking cost-effective meals at university.
Our pioneering programme transforms futures. It is not an end result—it is a mindset. Our pupils leave not only with ambition, but with the insight, skills and networks to realise it. In a world of uncertainty, we prepare girls not just to navigate change, but to shape it.
