Safer Internet Day: Sydenham High’s Vision for AI Use

This year's theme for Safer Internet Day is ‘Smart tech, safe choices – Exploring the safe and responsible use of AI’.

Smart Tech, Safe Choices

At Sydenham High School, we don’t just use technology, we master it. Our approach to Artificial Intelligence is defined by purposeful balance. We pride ourselves on being at the forefront of responsible AI use, ensuring that students are future ready, while remaining critical thinkers and prioritising human intellect.

At Sydenham High School, we don’t just use technology, we master it. Our approach to Artificial Intelligence is defined by purposeful balance. We pride ourselves on being at the forefront of responsible AI use and ensuring that students are future ready, while remaining critical thinkers and prioritising human intellect.

Ethical and responsible AI use is not just encouraged, but embedded into our curriculum, preparing students to use it both appropriately and effectively, and lead the conversation around it. Our digital literacy curriculum is built to empower young women to become critical thinkers and ethical architects of technology, through initiatives like the Tech for Action project, as part of our Elevate Curriculum, and Year 10 AI Hackathon.

However, we are not a ‘screen-first’ school, our guiding principle is that technology must add genuine value to the pedagogical experience. In practice, this is further exemplified through Sydenham High being a ‘phone-free’ school, and has been since 2024, aimed at reducing distraction and protecting pupils from the negative impact of smart phones and social media.

We thoughtfully integrate digital tools only where they enhance teaching, deepen learning, or help build essential future skills. We champion a healthy and effective balance, and understand the irreplaceable value of pen-to-paper work, physical books, and lively, tech-free classroom debates. Students are taught to understand when a digital tool enhances learning and when it might hinder deep, original thought.

Last year, we launched our AI Acceptable Use Scale, as an easy to follow guide for if, when and how AI can be integrated into school work. The scale starts at Level 1, ‘No AI’, where AI should not be used at any stage of the task, and this in particular applies to all work for Year 7 and 8 and, all tasks, unless specified otherwise. This scale moves up to Checking and Feedback, Planning, Collaboration and Full Use, where students must critically evaluate all outputs.
This scale acts as a useful tool for students and teachers alike, so that students do not outsource their learning but also, where appropriate, can learn to understand and work effectively with AI tools, as they continue to grow and become more integrated in our lives.

AI is not neutral. We know this and our curriculum pulls back the curtain on ‘anti-bias’ training and critical literacy, as well as understanding how AI Large Language Models (like Chat GPT) are trained and the potential limitations and ethical implications of this. Students are taught to question the source and identify bias, helping them to lead the conversation on ethical tech.

When using tech and AI, all students follow Sydenham High’s SPARK approach, encouraging users to use technology appropriately, and in line with the themes and guidance that underpin our technological ethos. Students must be Skilful, Purposeful, Accountable. Responsible and above all, Kind with their digital use.

Our forward thinking approach is not just backed by academic research but has also been recognised on a national level. We are proud to say that Sydenham High were Finalists for the ‘Best Use of Technology’ award by both Talk Education and Education Today 2025.

With our Digital Innovation Lead currently conducting doctoral research on AI adoption and Co-Chairing the GDST AI Committee, Sydenham High is at the forefront of the national conversation and is continuing to learn and grow. Our staff are trained to be one step ahead and how best to guide our girls to use technology appropriately through regular training.
