The Future of Lewisham: Young May of Lewisham Hustings 2026

This week we were privileged to hear from nine of the forty two Young Mayor of Lewisham candidates, including our very own Laila from Year 11.

Ambition and Courage in Action

We are proud to be a member of the Lewisham community and excited to have had the opportunity to hear from young people who are so passionate about the borough and creating real change.

This week’s assembly was opened by our Chamber Choir and their beautiful rendition of O Happy Day, before we were introduced to some of this year’s Young Mayor of Lewisham candidates.

The Young Mayor programme is a cornerstone of Lewisham’s identity and is the longest established young mayor programme in the country. Since being established in 2004, there have been 20 elected mayors, who have all been voted in by young people who live, work or study in Lewisham. The programme is uniquely written into the constitution, meaning the elected representative is a voice that is genuinely listened to by the local council. It is a powerful reminder of what can happen when young people are given the tools to advocate for their community.

We are proud to say that Sydenham High’s very own Laila, from Y11, is putting herself forward, and spoke with impressive conviction as she launched her second campaign for the role. Her manifesto focuses on two main prongs, creativity and safety.
She wants to transform unused spaces into creative hubs, and establish mentorship and internship opportunities, and create more events for young people in the area.
Furthermore, she proposed safety alarms to be accessible for all students and to set up an anonymous, non-judgemental, support line for at-risk young people.
Finally, Laila is also passionate about more accessible and effective SEND support across the borough.

It was enlightening to hear from a diverse range of students and perspectives, on their goals for the future of Lewisham. Candidates’ manifestos presented a broad and exciting vision, from crime reduction and ‘study hubs’ to free feminine hygiene products and youth-led publications!

Hearing these young people speak was an inspiring masterclass in courage and ambition. The love for Lewisham was clear amongst all candidates.

Voting will take place in school on February 4 2026, in the Lecture Theatre, and we look forward to welcoming in our girls exercising their right to vote.
