After exploring what the subject, ‘Classics’, entails, we delve into the world of the ancient Greeks with a variety of activities that promote research skills, oracy, collaboration, leadership and interpretation of source material. In the Spring Term we begin following a Latin course, called ‘Suburani’, that looks at the ancient world with fresh eyes and we continue this course through key stage 3. Beginning in AD 64, it follows the stories of a diverse cast of characters from the Subura in Rome and their travels through the Empire. At the heart of the course are the Latin stories, which follow the lives of a core cast of characters from the Subura: Sabina, a teenage girl who lives with her father Faustus and her aunt Rufina and the people enslaved in their household. People from across the Empire are met, of all ages and backgrounds, and from all levels of society to represent the diversity of the population and make the study of the ancient world relevant and engaging to pupils. Each chapter of Suburani includes Latin stories, language notes and exercises, and a historical or mythological element. Extensive digital resources support the course.
