TECH & AI
At Sydenham High School, we are dedicated to empowering the next generation of female leaders, creators, and innovators. We believe that true digital literacy goes beyond simply using technology; it’s about understanding its power, shaping its future, and leading with integrity in an increasingly complex world.
Our SPARK approach to technology means we are:
- Skilful: We are taught to be masters of technology, not servants to it, skilfully choosing the right tool to bring our ideas to life.
- Purposeful: We use digital tools with a clear purpose, ensuring that technology always adds value to our learning and our work.
- Accountable: We are accountable for our digital actions, using powerful tools like AI with academic integrity and a strong sense of ownership.
- Responsible: We are responsible digital citizens, learning to think critically about the impact of technology and to use it for good.
- Kind: We remember our “irreplaceable human qualities,” using technology in a way that is compassionate, collaborative, and kind to others.
Our forward-thinking approach has been recognised on a national level, with Sydenham High being Finalists for the ‘Best Use of Technology’ award by both Talk Education and Education Today.
Our Philosophy: Purposeful Balance
Our guiding principle is that technology must always add value. We thoughtfully integrate digital tools only where they enhance teaching, deepen learning, or build essential future skills. We are not a ‘screen-first’ school. We champion a healthy and effective balance, understanding the irreplaceable value of putting pen to paper, getting lost in a physical book, and engaging in lively, tech-free classroom debate. Our students learn to be masters of technology, not servants to it, equipped with the discernment to know which tool is right for the task.
Seamless Digital Learning
Our commitment to a seamless digital learning experience begins in Year 7 with the introduction of individual Chromebooks. These devices provide every student with access to Google Classroom where they can access teaching and learning materials. This is complemented with our unique digital learning platform, SYD Connect. This central hub gives pupils the tools to take ownership of her learning, providing direct access to everything from subject specific revision resources to stretch and challenge materials and careers guidance.
Responsible approach to AI
We are at the forefront of responsible AI use, ensuring pupils learn about AI and have the opportunity to learn with AI where appropriate. We have embedded ethical and responsible use of AI into our curriculum, preparing our students not only to use AI appropriately and effectively, but to lead the conversation around it. Our digital literacy curriculum is built to empower young women to become critical thinkers and ethical architects of technology.
Our AI principles are:
- Ethical and Responsible Use: We empower students to question algorithmic bias and understand the ethical responsibilities that come with powerful technology.
- From Consumer to Creator: Through innovative projects like our Tech for Action project that is part of our Elevate programme and the Year 10 AI hackathon we encourage girls to move beyond being users of technology to become confident creators.
- Critical Thinking and Discernment: We teach students to critique and evaluate AI-generated content, strengthening their own analytical and intellectual voice.
- Clear and Collaborative Guidelines: We provide a clear framework for how AI can be used appropriately, fostering both innovation and maintaining academic integrity.
At Sydenham High, we aren’t just preparing our students for the future; we are empowering them to design it.
