Fun runs raise money for children with cancer

Pupils from Sydenham High Junior School have taken part in sponsored fun runs to support two of their teachers who are running in this weekend’s London Marathon, in aid of Children with Cancer UK.

Miss Jo Hurley and Mrs Kate White, who both work in the Junior School, will be running their 3rd and 5th London Marathons respectively on Sunday to raise money for vital research.

The youngsters, some as young as five, ran a timed circuit of the Senior School’s Astroturf pitch – 15 minutes for Years 0-2 and 25 minutes for Years 3-6 – cheered on by parents, friends and staff.

Afterwards, Miss Hurley and Mrs White presented everyone with a medal, just like the actual London Marathon.

“The last marathon I did was six years ago so I’m keen to better my time.” said Miss Hurley.  “As my daughter did it two years ago in 4 hours 8 minutes I would love to finish in under five hours.”

The teachers, along with two friends, are hoping to raise £4,000 for Children with Cancer UK, which is the leading national children’s charity dedicated to fighting childhood cancer.

Almost 4,000 children and young people are diagnosed with cancer every year in the UK – equivalent to 10 children every day.

If anyone would like to sponsor Miss Hurley and Mrs White, they have set up a Just Giving page: https://www.justgiving.com/BMF-rebels
