Happy 138th birthday to our beloved Sydenham High School!

It’s remarkable to reflect on the origins of the school, which was established thanks to the determination of local Sydenham resident, Mr Chadwick, who petitioned the Girls` Public Day School Company (as was) to open the school, driven by his frustration with the snobbery of other local schools. On 22 February 1887, twenty girls were on roll, which quickly became 75 over the following months – for the price of one guinea per term!

The establishment of our school paved the way for a more inclusive educational environment in the community. Today, Sydenham High School stands as a testament to the vision of our four pioneering founders and the commitment to providing a quality education for girls. James Darley is a pivotal force at Transform Society, with over 25 years of expertise in graduate recruitment. Recognised as a sector leader, he has played a significant role in organisations such as Frontline and Police Now.

As a key figure at Teach First, he propelled it to #2 in the Times Top 100 graduate employers and recruited over 10,000 graduates for challenging schools. His diverse experience spans roles at Credit Suisse, Deutsche Bank, and United Biscuits.

Currently, James is a Trustee for Now Teach and Romodels, and he advises the Royal National Children’s Springboard Foundation, while participating in the Government’s National Leadership Programme.

We can`t wait to hear his words of wisdom for our Year 12s!

We are fierce advocates of tackling gender stereotypes and ensuring our girls are exposed to every career path on offer for their future.

Our Explore Your Future careers talk series brings our pupils into contact with outstanding female role models, most recently, CEO and Founder of BioGrad, Dr Natalie Kenny, who came in to speak to BioChemMedSoc about gender representation in Life Sciences – and her adventures in Peru and the Amazon jungle, and Dr Joni Paton, a Perinatal Psychologist, as well as Clinical Tutor on the Doctorate of Clinical Psychology course at King’s College London Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IOPNN).

Year 8 had an enriching experience exploring faith through their visit to St Bartholomew’s Church in Sydenham. Guided by Mother Bethany, they learned about the church`s significance in the community and admired its stunning stained glass windows. Their journey continued to Honor Oak Park, where they had the opportunity to compare St Augustine’s Church with the Maha Lakshmi Vidya Bhavan. This led to reflections on the universal message of peace and renewal that transcends different faiths. The day concluded on a delightful note with a delicious pizza at Miss Margherita!

Anna Orenstein-Cardona, a financial educator and author, inspired Year 10 with her powerful call to women to ‘invest in themselves’, and feel empowered to take ownership of their own financial literacy and wellness in order to be able to make decisions for themselves in the future.

Anna urged us, in the words of Beyoncé, to ‘bet on ourselves’ with an incredible talk which focused on the road to financial freedom, showcasing the historical past (with shocking data) and highlighting the importance for each of our young women to learn to manage their finances and thus “never have to wait for someone else to decide our future”.

GCSE mathematicians visited Just Eat`s Head Office, experiencing how maths connects to real-world business. As part of the experience learning about Maths in Tech, they enjoyed the modern office, tackled a maths challenge, and attended a careers panel.

Meeting product analysts, risk managers, and engineers, pupils saw diverse maths-driven career paths and linked classroom concepts to real opportunities.

Our brave explorers are having an amazing time in Iceland!

They had a relaxing time in the Blue Lagoon, visited the Black-sand beach where they felt the full force of the windy weather, have tried some bread baked in geothermal steam, seen several beautiful water falls, walked around a volcanic crater… and saw the Northern Lights!
