Year 12 GDST LEAD Showcase

edit

GDST LEAD launched in September 2021 as an innovative Leadership and Enterprise programme, aimed at empowering young women to cultivate the transferable skills essential for future leadership and entrepreneurship. Our Sixth Formers have been actively engaged in their enterprises this year, namely “Retro Reads” and “Crimson Connect”.

Yesterday, representatives from 20 schools, comprising over 30 teams from across the GDST family, gathered to present their sustainable business ideas developed through the GDST LEAD Programme, in collaboration with the London School of Economics.

Our team had an exceptional day, clinching not one, but two prestigious awards. The recognition was so remarkable that a new accolade, “The Judges Award,” was introduced specifically to honour the profound impact of Crimson Connect’s initiatives on teenage girls. We are immensely proud of all the girls and their accomplishments.

Retro Reads has pioneered a sustainable and ingenious book ordering service. Since October, they have curated a collection of pre-loved books, breathing new life into them through surprise packages. Customers provide their age, reading preferences, and interests, enabling Retro Reads to meticulously select books tailored to each individual. With a commitment to sustainability, they hand-package these treasures and personally deliver them. Remarkably, they have transformed this concept into a thriving business, delighting paying customers and turning a profit, all while minimising their environmental impact.

Retro Reads’ exceptional work was recognised with the prestigious “Best Presentation” award – the most prominent of the day. CEO Maisie Redford delivered a captivating pitch while holding a book, eloquently narrating the story of Retro Reads and introducing the team members who contributed to its success: Lola Scott, Omotade Ajala, Sherina Sivarasa, Viiktoria Fylymonova, and Yasmin Mbeyu. The presentation left a lasting impression on the audience, prompting Retro Reads to be invited to deliver it again, this time to all schools, judges, and mentors from the London School of Economics (LSE).

Crimson Connect has undertaken a noble mission to dispel myths and taboos surrounding menstruation, particularly addressing the stigma faced by young teenage girls. Through their non-profit initiative, they have established a comprehensive website offering invaluable advice, guidance, and factual information tailored to this demographic. Their innovative approach includes webcasts where they engage in candid conversations with women sharing their personal experiences and insights. Additionally, they collaborate with experts to demystify the menstrual cycle, making essential information more accessible to younger girls.

Crimson Connect’s presentation, styled as a podcast, featured hosts Tabitha Kayode and Rebecca Whitfield leading discussions with the rest of the team: Susanna Cabral, Jeeya Patel, Polly Rigby, and Ayla Goldsmith. The team’s bravery was evident as they fearlessly shared their stories about their first periods, effectively breaking down barriers and normalising the conversation. The impact of Crimson Connect’s initiative was profound, prompting the judges to create a new award, “The Judges Award”. They commended the team as catalysts for change and a true inspiration, recognising their remarkable efforts to empower young girls and challenge societal norms.

We couldn’t be prouder of all that they have achieved. Special thanks to Mr Hurst for his guidance and leadership, working closely with the team and supporting them throughout this amazing journey.
