We will remember them - Sydenham High School

We will remember them

edit

Today we held a moving whole school assembly for remembrance.  It was wonderful to come together as a community to remember the men and women who have lost their lives to war or conflict.

Our assembly opened with Nimrod, from Elgar’s Enigma Variations, by Elgar played beautifully by Zahra, Hannah, Elisa and Alisa.  Marnie from year 6 then read Poppys for Remembrance with superb eloquence, after which we heard about the life of Lieutenant Bertram Cash Matthews (1893-1917), who served and died in the first world war.  Evie in year 5 then gave us the signal for our two minute silence with the Last Post, after which our Head Girl, Maddie, read In Flanders’s Fields and the assembly concluded with some exquisite flute playing from Kitty in year 2.  We had time to reflect and remember and the assembly was made even more poignant by a video message from an officer serving in Somalia, an uncle of one of our girls.

The Junior School this morning before coming to assembly had made their own field of poppies, an incredibly touching and moving gesture.

We will remember them.
