Creative, Languages & STEAM Careers Fair - Sydenham High School

Creative, Languages & STEAM Careers Fair

edit

From geologists to musicians, architects to forensic specialists, Sydenham High pupils had access to an array of representatives from the world of creative industries, languages and STEAM at the Careers Fair on Wednesday 4 May. It was a carousel-style event for pupils in years 9-13, and their parents and local schools were also invited. Pupils were able to move around freely to speak with representatives from institutions such as London College of Communication (University of the Arts London), SOAS University of London, and the Women’s Engineering Society as well as many individuals from a variety of organisations large and small and freelancers.

Participants could also choose to attend two presentations in the Lecture Theatre – Laura Massey, SOAS, spoke about The Benefits of Studying Languages and Laura Luckhurst from Women’s Engineering Society gave an insight into her route into Engineering.

We were delighted to host several alumnae who shared their experiences about the varied paths available after Sydenham High including:

  • Lola Cookman (Class of 2018) is an Associate Producer, Work Editorial, an offline commercial edit house based in the hustle and bustle of Covent Garden.
  • Joanna Hall (Class of 2014) is a serial traveller who has worked abroad for the British Council and is now an Attendance & Education Welfare Officer
  • Thea Stevenson (Class of 2004) is a Multimedia & Audio Visual Manager at the Wellcome Trust.

It proved to be a thoroughly inspiring evening with positive feedback from participants from both sides and we were encouraged to see so many pupils take advantage of this opportunity to broaden their knowledge of the world of work and the skills required to succeed in their future.

We are grateful to all from the Sydenham High community who gave up their time and extend our thanks to all those who helped make the evening such a success.
