Black History Month 2023 - Sydenham High School

Black History Month 2023

edit

We had an eventful Black History Month!

There were many stimulating events, and some amazing visiting guests. We explored diverse representation in medical literature, celebrated inspirational female Black British Icons like Diane Abbott and Olaudah Equiano, and more!

We launched the month by welcoming Miss Karis Morris Brown from the Black Cultural Archives to share with us the history and importance of celebrating Black History.

We also had the honour of hosting Sussie Anie, an award-winning author who shared her insights on the joy of imagination and community. She explored how we can find inspiration in everyday encounters, and lauded the value of pursuing our own curiosity. Plus, we were delighted to have signed copies of her novel, ‘To Fill a Yellow House,’ to enjoy over the half-term break.

We also had a movie night, showing ‘Hidden Figures’ in our Recital Hall. And of course we had our fun annual MOBO concert, run by our talented pupils, a diverse and vibrant event showcasing performances of music of Black origin. Ms Blair even performed a duet as her parting gesture before embarking on maternity leave.

To conclude an eventful Black History Month, our Year 8 pupils participated in a thought-provoking workshop at the Maritime Museum. The workshop centered on themes of Diversity, Art, and Citizenship, providing us with a rich and interactive experience.

From food to music, and movies to Rap Battles, we had a lot of fun this October. An enormous thank you to everyone who took part either by organising, presenting or performing in our celebration of the impact of Black heritage and culture!
