Enrichment in Classical Studies

edit

Classical Studies allow us to explore the source and history of our current civilization, focusing on the civilizations of Greece and Rome during the Classical period. Its multi-disciplinary approach combines elements of History, Literature, and the History of Art, showcasing the profound influence of the Greeks and Romans on the Western world.

Our Year 13 class recently visited the British Museum to study the Bassae Frieze and the Elgin Marbles. Observing these free-standing sculptures in person significantly enhanced their understanding of the Greek Art topic in Classical Civilisation, extending their learning beyond the classroom.

In another engaging session, our Year 10 and Sixth Form students participated in a virtual conference with Oxford High this week. An Oxford High Sixth Former presented their EPQ speech, exploring the portrayal of women in Latin Literature, coins, art, and other sources. We also had the privilege of listening to Professor Edith Hall from Durham University, who shared her passion for making classics more accessible, particularly Greek drama. She spoke eloquently about a girl’s experience of ancient Greek religion, tracing the various cults and rituals she would have participated in.

The topics covered are fascinating and undoubtedly provide us with a different perspective on women in the ancient world.
