Celebrating #vote100 - Sydenham High School

Celebrating #vote100

edit

Sydenham High has a wonderful programme of activities planned to celebrate #vote100, and we are excited to kick start the week by welcoming Sally Nicholls, author of ‘Bright Things A Girl Can Do’, to speak with our girls in years 5-9. Sally’s book is a historic novel set in England between 1914-18 and focuses on the lives of three young women and their involvement in the suffragette movement. The novel brings to life the work of the many courageous women who fought for their freedom and sets the tone for why #vote100 is such an important celebration. Our whole school assembly on 6 February will celebrate the anniversary of the Representation of the People Act, which gave some women the right to vote for the first time. Poetry readings from the Junior School and suffragette songs being performed by the Senior School Choir will create a lively event but also ensure a key message about the act and its importance is passed on. The week will be filled with a variety of lunchtime and lesson activities, from sash making to Warhol inspired art. A plethora of  inspirational talks will ensure there is something for everyone during our week long celebration.
