Sydenham pupils win two golds at inaugural GDST Biennale

edit

With a total of 25 awards up for grabs, the inaugural GDST Biennale was held at beautiful Dulwich Picture Gallery at the end of June.

Throughout May,  Art and Design students were invited to submit their work to the judges across four categories:

  • Portraiture
  • Landscape
  • 3D/Sculpture
  • Nature

Each Award had three age categories, one for each Key stage; 3, 4 and 5. Twelve Awards, each with a runner up and a Best in Show prize as well.

Shortlisted from over 100 entries across the GDST, two of our artists were among 24 students invited to the awards ceremony at the South London gallery.  Guest judges were professional artists Violeta Bravo and the BP national portrait award winner, James Hague.  Pupils enjoyed lunch in the leafy gardens of the Picture Gallery, plus a guided tour of the Berthe Morrisot Exhibition. They also took part in a watercolour workshop before the prizegiving event.

To our absolute delight, Year 9, Sydenham High girls,  Kristina Loizou and Isabelle Hale, both came away with Gold awards.

Kristina won gold in the Abstract category for Key Stage 3 and

Isabelle won gold in the Sculpture & 3D category

Kristina’s piece will be displayed in school whilst Isabelle’s striking 3D bubble gum sculpture will be adorning the windows of Lolli’s sweet shop in Bromley High Street. Their work will also be immortalised in print on the GDST Biennale Calendar!

For the second year in a row, our pupils have created these vibrant giant sweets which make for stunning window displays Lolli’s Bromley, run by the family of a Sydenham High pupil.

Enormous congratulations to you both!
