Joanne Butcher, the Consulting Producer behind the book ‘Getting Your Film Funded, Produced and Distributed Globally: A Seven Step System – The Film Box Office S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Formula’, boasts extensive experience with over 140 independent films across various stages of development, spanning both features and series. With a focus on fundraising and distribution, Joanne’s track record includes facilitating the sale of numerous feature films and contributing to the distribution of over 21 features. “Getting Your Film Funded, Produced And Distributed Globally: A Seven Step System, The Film Box Office S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Formula” delves deep into each step of the framework, offering practical advice and real-world examples.

Joanne’s expertise extends beyond fundraising, as evidenced by her roles as the founder of Unstoppable, a disability film festival, the Miami Gay and Lesbian International Film Festival, and the Brazilian Film Festival, Miami. Additionally, she has made significant contributions to organisations such as Brown Girls Doc Mafia and Slamdance.

Graduating from Sydenham High in 1978, Joanne continued her academic journey with English and European Literature at the University of Warwick before moving on to the University of Miami for her Masters Degree. She attributes her time at Sydenham as instrumental in shaping her character and building her confidence. Born in London to a bi-racial, bi-cultural, and multinational background, with Trinidadian heritage, Joanne faced challenges at home during her high school years, making school a safe and joyful place for her. She excelled in various sports and was particularly skilled in Football, Tennis, Netball, and Hockey, spending as much time at school as possible. Reflecting on her school days, Sydenham remains her happy place. Despite encountering racial comments from a classmate, she recalls how the class got together to resolve the conflict, reinforcing the culture of kindness in Sydenham High, which has remained unchanged since then.

Joanne shared that she was the first in her family to attend a private school and university, and that because Sydenham high never doubted that she would attend college, it never crossed her mind to doubt herself. Empowered and determined, she pursued literacy, eventually falling in love with the film industry. Her skills have taken her abroad to the US, where she has supported numerous filmmakers in achieving the seemingly impossible.

In January 2024, Joanne published her first book, sharing her journey with the world. We look forward to reconnecting with Joanne as she is enthusiastic about giving back to the GDST and our Sydenham Girls! She is committed to seeing our girls thrive, be bold and know that they are empowered to forge their own path.
